When babies are born, their skin is often covered in their very own built-in moisturizer, called the vernix. The vernix nourishes and protects babies’ skin, keeping it hydrated in their first few hours in the world. It turns out that squalene—a version of squalane that our bodies naturally produce—is the most abundant lipid found in the vernix.
